Flying Under the Radar – Research Survey
This survey aims to gather stories of the experiences of people who identify as female, being diagnosed with autism post 18 years of age. The findings will inform a short animation called ‘Flying Under the Radar’, directed by film maker Solene Guichard which will be exhibited at LEVEL Centre from September 2021.
Solene is a French filmmaker based in the UK. She studied philosophy in France and graduated with a Master’s degree in Film Studies from Queen’s University Belfast. Her work mainly focuses on live-action and animated short films. She has been featured in the WomenCineMakers magazine, at the Beyond Conference 2020, on BBC iplayer, and QFT iplayer. A few of her films have also been screened at Cork International Film Festival, Outfest LA, and Belfast Film Festival. She has been supported by Northern Ireland Screen, Future Screens NI, and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.
‘Flying Under the Radar’ is her next project, which has potential to be turned into a feature film. Being passionate about inclusion in the film industry, Solene wants to give a voice to women on the spectrum who often feel misunderstood. She wants to portray what it feels like to seek a life-changing diagnosis later in life.
It will allow autistic, self identifying females to speak up and to give them a platform to share their experiences. By creating this film, we aim to raise awareness about some of the stigmas that still exist around females with autism. Research on autism in recent years has shown that girls and women are more than likely to be misdiagnosed or to be ‘flying under the radar’.
We are looking to gather first hand quotes and experiences to inform the creative process. We hope to gather a broad range of voices with lived experience of the various aspects of Autism and other spectrum diagnoses.
