Making Faces

8 September 22 – 6 January 23

Level Makes: Visual Art is one of the creative workshops that we hold at LEVEL. The group meets one day a week during term time and the group starts a new theme each term.

Working with visual arts facilitator Helen Jackson, the Level Makes group has been creating a series of self portraits, initially working from photographs and photocopies of themselves, then onto acetate sheets and finally the large mixed media pieces.

The final portraits were created using pages from a local phone directory, magazines, an old paperback book, tissue paper and permanent markers, all stuck together with pva glue.

Making Faces is on display in the Corridor Gallery at Level Centre from 8 September 2022 to 6 January 2023. The exhibition shows work in progress along with a quote from each artist and a picture of the final artwork.

Entry is free. Level Centre is usually open Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm. No need to book, but please phone in advance.

The Artists

Mr D Salisbury

We asked Dave: What did you use to make the portrait?

Dave said: For the background, we reused pages from the telephone book. For my blonde hair I used white paper and yellow tissue paper. For my grey coat, I used white, grey and black cut up pieces from a magazine.

We asked Lauren: What do you like most about your portrait?

Lauren said: I liked using newspapers and doing my hair in layers. I also liked tracing my face and mark making, as well as using pink and blue colours as I wear those colours a lot.

We asked Tom: What are your favourite
materials to use?

Tom said: I like tissue paper as there are lots of different colours. They are nice and bright. I like to use reds and yellows. It is good to reuse materials like we have done with the portraits.

Arts Facilitator: Helen Jackson

Helen Jackson is a visual artist with a background in applied and participatory art. Helen’s own work explores layers and transparency, through the materials she uses and the themes of identity and reflection. She works across many creative practices, including sculpting, mark making, drawing, illustration and digital imagery.

Helen said: “I have enjoyed seeing the portraits evolve and come to life with each layer added. Not only does each portrait capture the different personalities within the group, it also shows an increase in confidence and pride in their work.”
