The Severed Wing
11 September 2024 – 8 January 2025
Watch Corinne, a disabled artist who’s been confined to bed for six years, transform into a bird in their film The Severed Wing. Bed confinement is extremely isolating, but Corinne lives by the woods and hears bird song from their bedroom window daily.
During the performance Corinne transforms into their true self and escapes confinement. The Severed Wing explores Corinne’s limited mobility, their wings can only ‘fly’ depending on Corinne’s chronic pain level. A battle between the reality of Corinne’s health and their desire to fly.
The Severed Wing was first developed and presented in May 2024 as part of The Lowry’s Scratch Nights programme, as a remote performance live streamed from the safety of Corinne’s bed.

Artist: Corinne
Corinne is a disabled self-portrait artist producing mainly photographic depictions from the same 2 by 1.5 metre space; their bed. This year marks their sixth year of spending almost every day confined to bed. Their art is a form of therapy to ease ongoing struggles with severe mental illness.
“The biggest barrier to developing my career is my inability to be physically present; the rise of virtual working during the pandemic removed this barrier. My life and art have become inextricably entwined, to bury my struggles deep within would allow them to thrive, but through my use of art as therapy, I am offered a cathartic release”.
