andrew martyn sugars prefers to write in lower case.

andrew martyn sugars works trans-disciplinarily, working at the intersection of fine art, socially engaged, and facilitation practices. their practice is non‑linear, moving through threads of enquiry sitting in a hinterland between outsider art and contemporary art — a place that feels both isolating and generative. they describe this as a kind of paradox: the sense of not getting anywhere, viewed through a perfectionist and neurodivergent lens, contrasted with a deep need to keep exploring because the act of making is what brings meaning and presence.

residency plans:

the spark residency frames time to return to an earlier act of collecting. several years ago, i collected and stored daily newspapers from an annual moment. this was partly an instinctive act, a desire to hold onto something otherwise transient and partly i was curious about how the predictions and assumptions entering into public consciousness through print media panned out over time. during the collecting period my neurodivergence began to come to light.

my plan for the residency is to open the box of newspapers alongside some means to record my reactions as i reveal the contents of the box. once i’m in that flow, i don’t know where i might end up with the research as a lot will depend on what emerges for me. i plan to share images on instagram and keep a blog to capture the starting intent and reflections of the actions made.

i’m curious about being present with the newspapers and what emerges for me in all its honest vulnerability. there are some secondary plans around reconstructing the revealing of the box contents and to film that. for the residency i have a question; what is the materiality of the contents of the box?
