About Level

LEVEL is an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation and is also supported by Derbyshire County Council. We produce and promote art that is powerful and of relevance to all of our society – art that is not afraid to be different.

 

About LEVEL’s Residencies

Residencies are planned to take place between April 2021 and September 2021. We will select 5 Artists or companies to complete a 1 to 2 week residency with LEVEL.

We are looking for applications for the following categories:

  • Learning disabled artist or company, you can be from a visual, performing or digital arts background
  • Disabled artist or company, from a visual, performing or digital arts background
  • Digital artist or company
  • Visual artist or company
  • Performing artist or company

Who can apply?

For this series of residencies we welcome applications from UK based, established professional artists and companies from a variety of disciplines including visual arts, performing arts and digital arts practice.
 

Please note, we will only accept applications from UK-based disabled Artists and Companies or Artists and Companies whose work is suitable for disabled adults and the wider community.

What are we looking for?

LEVEL is seeking bold, ambitious and cutting edge ideas to support our mission in celebrating the Art that Difference Makes.

We hope to develop partnerships and relationships with the selected visiting artists and companies beyond these residencies. We want to be challenged by new ideas and we want artists to have resources and expertise to think and create.

Coronavirus and Local Restrictions

Due to the current pandemic, if restrictions apply LEVEL will offer residencies online. 

The Residency offer is:

  • A 1 to 2 week long artist retreat
  • A financial contribution of up to £2000 for the residency
  • An opportunity to meet the team
  • Discussion at the end of the residency with optional sharing
  • Access to LEVEL’s in house resources
  • Post residency discussion with LEVEL Centre staff to discuss the outcomes and next steps


How to Apply

To apply please complete the online application form which can be found here.

If you are unable to complete this form, please contact the LEVEL Centre team on info@levelcentre.com or call 01629 734 848.

The application form will capture your personal details, which residency category you are applying for and an opportunity to inform LEVEL of your access needs.

In addition to the application form, you will need to upload the following:

  • An up to date CV
  • Your project proposal, which needs to cover the following areas:
    • Explain your idea and who is involved  
    • What do you want to explore in your residency?
    • Explain in what ways your practice and idea relates to LEVEL aims 
    • Outline any outcomes you would like to achieve

Level will accept the following formats for the proposal, please clearly label your files:

  • Written submission that is no more than 2 sides of A4
  • Video submission that is no longer than 3 minutes
  • Audio submission as an mp3 or wav file, that is no longer than 3 minutes

If you wish, you can also upload a maximum of 3 additional examples of your work, clearly labelled with your name. These could be:

  • Images or Photographs
  • Video Footage
  • Web links to galleries or videos – please remember to include passwords if necessary

 

Important dates:

The deadline for submissions is: Monday 1st March @ 10am

Interviews will take place between: 16th – 19th March

About The LEVEL Centre

For those of you unfamiliar with The LEVEL Centre,  we have 2 multipurpose spaces, a gallery and a Visual Arts studio. The space your residency will take place in will be determined by your idea and availability.


Situated in rural Derbyshire, the LEVEL Centre is a cutting-edge, purpose built arts centre designed especially to create opportunities for disabled adults to enjoy both discovering their own creative abilities and experience high quality art work in a safe and supported environment.

  • Changing room/shower room with hoist

  • Kitchen with fridge, microwave and hot drinks facilities
  • Dedicated media editing suite
  • Onsite Parking

LEVEL Space: Key Features

  • Plain white walls – ideal for projections
  • Internet access
  • Black out curtains to transform the space in to a black box theatre
  • Central Rotunda with small circular lighting rig
  • Room Dimensions – Length: 7.3 m, Width: 7.1m, Ceiling Height: 4m
  • Please note, this space does not have sprung flooring

Event Space: Key Features

  • Blank white walls – ideal for projections
  • Internet access
  • Black out curtains to transform the space in to a black box theatre
  • Jester Zero88 Lighting desk & lighting rig
  • Yamaha mixing desk with Amp
  • 4 Wall mounted RCF Speakers
  • Room Dimensions – Length: 9.7m, Width: 7.1m, Ceiling Height: 4m
  • Please note, this space does not have sprung flooring

 

Gallery Space: Key Features

  • Light & airy
  • Internet access
  • Plain white walls 
  • Power sockets throughout – ideal for installing floor lights, TVs or speakers along the space
  • Handrails along the wall
  • Room Dimensions – Length: 17.2m, Width: 2.8m

Visual Arts Studio: Key Features

  • Accessible space
  • Sinks, electricity and internet access
