Maddie Morris

BBC Young Folk Award winner Maddie Morris is a hopeful and generous storyteller, an artist who strives to make a difference in the world. Folk songs have always told stories, but how Maddie makes their mark is by turning this storytelling into action. With a particular focus on LGBTQ+ and disability rights, they use their work to highlight inequality, challenge viewpoints and provide an inclusive space for shared experiences. Described by Jim Moray as “leading the next generation of socially conscious songwriters”, their work explores personal narratives and political storytelling, blending English folk traditions with their lived experience as a trans, autistic person.

Passionately political yet gently understated, this is music that deftly treads the path between art and activism.

Residency plans:

After completing the “Songs and Stories” tour, Maddie will use their residency to explore the next steps of the project: exploring the zines filled out by participants and their role in a piece of collaborative work, exploring the use of light and sound, and creating multisensory elements to live performance.
