Residency feedback:
‘My name is Robyn, I am Autistic and have a few other disabilities ranging from sensory to physical.
I live in London. I am a musician (I play space trumpet), and run a series of gigs called “ Robyn’s Rocket” which aim to be Inclusive Conscious.
I didn’t grow up in London, I grew up in rural Suffolk the nearest shop was 4 miles away and there was a bus once a week (it no longer exists).
I’m very aware of everything not being in London. I wanted to created a portable Robyn’s Rocket to go to festivals and other places. I describe this as a space pod.
I was kindly given the opportunity to do a residency at LEVEL centre with my friend Cleo.
I wanted to use the same materials we use at Robyn’s Rocket so that it looks familiar to people who have come. Or will come in the future to Robyn’s Rocket.
I also want to use materials that are as sustainable and accessible as possible.
Day 1 – me and Cleo made the walls of the space pod using therma wrap (which I’d usually used in lofts to keep houses warm), cardboard and some string. Cleo and I are both musicians so we finished the day by jamming.
Day 2 – we made cardboard and Velcro joins so the walls can stick together. We had a jam. We made a list of things to make to go in the space pod. We stuck cardboard boxes together and put card and paper on top ready for painting.
Day 3 – Cleo made a steering wheel. I really wanted to have a steering wheel that wasn’t fixed to anything so it could be put in the hands of anyone who wants to drive. We designed a control panel, and Cleo made it so it can flatpack.
I made a huge rocket sign and co creator signs. Cleo made space helmets people can hold up based on the space helmet of the space guardian a character I designed to guard the space.
Day 4 – we put everything up using fishing wire. Cleo made the space guardian stand up using tape and cardboard.
I also made a character called Bleep Bleep, our air BnB had a lot of things that beeped so I wanted to make a character who could communicate in bleeps.
We did a short performance in the space pod before packing it up, it all goes flat.
Robyn Rocket
Robyn Rocket plays trumpet through guitar pedals (Space Trumpet). Robyn grew up in Suffolk but is now based in London. Robyn is Autistic and is supported by Heart N Soul who believe in the power and talents of people with Learning Disabilities and Autistic people.
During the LEVEL centre residency Robyn, assisted by Robyn’s Rocket crew member and multi instrumentalist Cleo Savva , will be building a space pod. The idea of the space pod is to create a small flexible space which can be used for sound and visual experiences, a base for workshops and be something that can travel to festivals.
Robyn will document the process and aims to have an open space pod on the last day of the residency.
Robyn’s Rocket is a inclusive conscious gig series which takes place at London’s Cafe OTO and is streamed online. Inclusive conscious means to :
1 – look who isn’t in a space (this could be disabled people, people of a particular gender or age group etc)
2 – invite them in
3 – ask for feedback
4 – do the feedback
Robyn hopes to visit some UK festivals throughout summer 2026. Their space pod work is inspired by the 2024 installation by John Powell.
